Spectrum Major Awards Criteria
Semester 1 (quarter 2) and Semester 2 (quarter 3) grades will be used to determine our Top Scholars.
Courses taken in a year other than the current year or at another school will not be considered as part of the calculations.
Grade 9 – Top 20 students, no top academic will be determined. Teachers of Grade 9 students will determine the top 4 students in their class in order of excellence based on their professional judgment in English 9, Math 9, Science 9, Socials 9.
Grade 10 – Top 20 students based on their grades in the courses listed below. The student with the highest average score in English 10, Math 10, Science 10, Socials 10 will be considered the top academic for the year.
Grade 11 – Top 20 students based on their grades in the courses listed below.
The student with the highest average score in any five academic courses will be considered the top academic for the year. Courses taken in a year other than the current year or at another school will not be considered as part of the calculations.
Grade 12 – Top 20 students based on their grades in the courses listed below.
The student with the highest average score in any four academic courses will be considered the top academic for the year. Courses taken in a year other than the current year or at another school will not be considered as part of the calculations.
Junior Student of the Year
This is the award for the Grade 10 top overall student. The ideal candidate will have excelled in academics, arts, athletics, and citizenship. Nominated by staff.
Senior Student of the Year
This is the award for the Grade 12 top overall student. The ideal candidate will have excelled in academics, arts, athletics, and citizenship. Nominated by staff.
Junior Citizenship Award
This is the award for a Grade 10 student who has demonstrated positive effort and attitude in all areas of Spectrum life, and significant service to school and community. Nominated by staff.
Senior Citizenship Award
This is the award for a Grade 12 student who has demonstrated positive effort and attitude in all areas of Spectrum life, and significant service to school and community. Nominated by staff.

Spirit of Alliances
BEAR Award: To honour the Bear’s gifts, Spectrum recognizes students who act with intention. These students advocate for themselves, and are organized, engaged in class, and prepared to learn.
WOLF Award: To honour the Wolf’s gifts, Spectrum recognizes students who are generous in their interactions with others. These students are often the first to volunteer. They encourage and include others, and set a positive tone in and out of the classroom.
RAVEN Award: To honour the Raven’s gifts, Spectrum recognizes students who are courageous. These clever and imaginative students inspire unique and great work in the classroom. They are creative thinkers who take risks, solve problems, and offer a fresh approach to learning.
SALMON Award: To honour the Salmon’s gifts, Spectrum recognizes students who navigate challenges and change. These students may have overcome adversity or shown considerable improvement. They are adaptable, resilient, and persistent both inside and outside of school.
